Lately, I’ve been thinking about something that has been irking me: free speech. Or rather, I don’t like how people seem to perceive free speech. You see, it’s hard to ignore how much the worst type of people rallied behind “free speech” up until now.

I can’t stop thinking about how many times I’ve seen hateful fucks, foaming at the mouth, screeching about how feminism is awful or how brown people are bad — then screeching about how they have “the right to free speech” when people call them out.

And you know what? I’m not sure I’m actually for free speech as much as I used to think I was, especially after seeing what the “free speech” squad had done to the US.

“Free speech” is a term that is not really understood by the average American.

When the Bill of Rights was made, the first Amendment was a threefold law: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the right to peacefully assemble. There’s a reason why this was the First Amendment. It’s the most important part of our democracy.

The Constitution and the Bill of Rights are (kind of) held in a near-sacred position in our country. To deny the Bill of Rights is seen as a deeply un-American act. And that’s a great thing…until you realize that half of the country doesn’t understand what “freedom of speech” is supposed to mean.
