Man, if white America was a person, they’d probably be involuntarily committed right now. It doesn’t take a very perceptive person to notice it, either. There’s a strange, growing despair among white people in the country — but why they’re in despair changes greatly depending on who you talk to.
As a person who’s about as white as they come, I end up being privy to a lot of conversations that my friends don’t always hear. And lately, it’s been pretty wild to see how white people have been dealing with the Trump presidency.
Simply put, America’s white population is more fractured than ever before. Worse still, it seems like it might be hard to ever really unite ourselves as a community once more.
If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say we’re seeing a 33–33–33 split in terms of reactions to Trump.
So, I should explain what I’m seeing and why it matters to everyone. Why? Because it’s the only way to figure out where to go from here and the only way to understand the dynamics of white people right now.
Now, let’s talk about each major faction.
Around 33 percent of white Americans love Trump — and it’s becoming a trauma bond.
This isn’t a surprise to anyone, right? FOX, the Red Pill, and a bunch of other groups poisoned a lot of minds and radicalized them over the course of 15–20 years. It’s at the point where they don’t care about facts anymore.
This 33 percent of people are deeply upset. They’ve watched their privileges slip through their fingers. The myriad of “sure things” they had in the past are now either questionable at best or gone altogether.
They feel resentful. They feel increasingly pushed out of mainstream culture, almost even targeted because they feel like all they ever hear about is how white people are bad. This is doubly true with white males, who seem to be totally unwilling to have any form of self-introspection before.
I’ve explained the “why” before, but they’ve been brainwashed and traumatized into hating others. They view Trump as a savior because, in some weird, fucked up corner of their minds, they hope that voting GOP will turn back the clock to a time that was more comfortable for them.
I mean, that time actually never existed, but it’s not like that matters.
The people who are cheering on Trump are hoping to punish others for “taking what is theirs,” “stepping out of line,” and otherwise not fitting into their perceived idea of what America used to be like.
They’re unshakeable in their faith to Trump until reality hits them and the GOP’s work directly impacts them in an undeniable way. I’ll call them Trumpers for this article.
Then, there’s the 33 percent of white Americans who are openly resisting the Trump presidency.
These are the people who abhor Donald Trump. Most of the people in this group didn’t want a second term or a first term because they understood the gravity of the situation.
If you’re a regular reader of mine and white, this is probably your group. Chances are high that you’re a feminist, LGBTQIA+, or have very close friends or family members who are at risk of dying as a result of a Trumpian policy.
We’re not a happy bunch. Many of us feel betrayed by the corporate Democrats and DINOs. This group often has a lot of infighting, simply because we don’t understand that perfect can be the opposite of good.
Many of us feel totally demoralized by what’s going on, not to mention mortified by our fellow countrymen. Many of us cut off Trumper relatives because they became unbearably hateful toward others.
We’ll call this group Leftists for this story.
Finally, the last 33 percent are the “zombies.”
Zombies are the people who just shuffle through life, not really taking a side. They try to make do with what they have, focusing on the daily, without getting involved. Why? Because they don’t care.
Sometimes, zombies are made from left-leaning people who just broke after caring too much. More often than not, they are just people who are afraid to make waves because it may make people hate them.
Whites in the “Zombie” lane have a unique privelege — they rarely have to worry about being hunted down the way that so many American Leftists do. So, they sop up the privilege, enjoy playing both sides of the fence when convenient, and keep their heads down.
They don’t care when their rights (or their loved ones’ rights) are taken away, per se. They just care that nothing makes waves in their nice little bubble. Zombies likely didn’t vote in the last elections, nor will they vote later.
Like with all other residents, white people all seem to have picked a side when it comes to politics.
Unlike other groups, whites in general are far more split up in their beliefs. And it’s actually causing serious problems in white families, communities, and more.
Simply put, white people are more fractured than they’ve ever been before. In the past, white people generally just assumed that the other white people around them weren’t going to harm them.
Today, there’s a palpable pause, a strange air of suspicion between us white folks.
As a white person, I’ve noticed that many white people tend to “sniff out” which group you belong to before they fully commit.
Much of the “sniff test” I see going on deals with Trumpers. Simply put, no one aside from other conservatives really feels totally comfortable around conservatives anymore.
Most of us Leftists don’t want to get too close to Trumpers because of their lack of ethics and empathy. Zombies tend to avoid them too, but it’s often because they don’t want to deal with the drama that comes with their politics.
Even in casual seettings, the aggression so many Trumpers have makes it hard for people to want to be around them. We all know that most mass shooters are conservative. It’s because hate and Trump just seem to go together.
Even in the dating scene, most women avoid Trumpers because of the way Trump emboldened misogyny — despite most white women voting GOP. Trumpers are having such a hard time finding friends and partners, they have to have their own safe spaces for it.
This makes sense. I mean, think about it. Would any sane woman really want to risk dating a man who might abuse her, only to blame her for it and vote against her right to leave?
Not really.
This comes with an issue: while Trumpers tend to wear a lot of Trump merch, not all of them do. Some of the most stunning proponents of conservatism fly right under the radar until they drop the bomb on you.
The problem is that it’s hard to figure out who’s who when you all look the same. I’ve seen hip hop heads who voted Trump before. And I’ve seen cowboy types who were avid Kamala fans.
So, we’re all kind of stuck just trying to size up one another so that we don’t end up talking to people who want to hurt us through votes or violence toward our loved ones.
It’s awful because many conservatives lie just to get laid or accepted. The more they lie, the longer most Leftist and zombie whites take to deal with the “sniff” test.
Some women go so far as to quietly avoid dating white men because they were so badly deceived my conservatives earlier on or due to the sheer burnout of trying to spot a real Leftist in the crowd.
I suspect that trend will grow.
So, with any budding friendship is that new “sniff them out” phase to make sure they’re worth getting involved with. It’s added a palpable level of distance to many communities.
Among white people, there’s also a certain level of embarrassment many of us feel as a direct result of Trump.
If the “sniffing out” aspect wasn’t bad enough, we have to talk about the other major elephant in the room: the way Trump destroyed America’s reputation abroad.
Unfortunately, the numbers at the polls don’t lie. As white people, this fall from grace rests almost entirely on our shoulders — as well as (to a far lesser point) the shoulders of many Latino men.
Trump got put into office by white America. If whites voted the same way that almost every other demographic did, we would have Kamala in office. This is on white people and there’s no denying it.
As a white American, I realize the look I’ll get if I travel abroad. People will assume that I voted for Trump, that I back his beliefs, and that I wanted fascism. This is not true, but not everyone who I tell that to will believe me.
I’m unbelievably embarrassed that my demographic ushered in the GOP’s rule. And to a point, I think most other Leftists are, too. Even if we didn’t vote Trump in, we’re still lumped in with Trumpers and it sucks.
A lot of Trumpers don’t understand why white people don’t always act like they’re proud to be white. My friend said it best: “It’s hard to feel proud of your demographic when you’re on the wrong side of history.”
I’m sure many Germans felt the same way in the 1940s.
The result of all this is an awkward, suffocating feeling of loneliness.
As a person who travels in many circles, I noticed something about various pockets of the country that aren’t white mainstream Americans: camaraderie.
Among much of the LGBTQIA+ community, I see that silent nod that says, “I got your back, we shall overcome.” Among the Black community, there’s a newfound fire burning in so many peoples’ hearts to march against racism.
And in white America? Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see much of that in my day-to-day living. I just see more and more people self-isolating, more people burying themselves in work to try to stay afloat, and more people just not doing okay.
In the communities I belong to, people don’t even respond when others reach out for help anymore. They just pawn others off, telling them to “go to therapy,” because everyone’s so scared of rocking the boat, watching a person break, or being in the wrong place with the wrong person.
Communities were not just about financial support and ties in the past. They were also emotional support networks, networks of friends. White Americans have lost their communities as a direct result of the schism in politics — and it shows.
The irony here, in a sick way, is both tragic and telling.
Trumpers often felt like white people are “the bad guys” in everyone’s eyes, the scapegoat. What they don’t realize is that we don’t see it as all white people — we see their racist, sexist, homophobic asses as the bad guys.
I’ve noticed that many radicalized conservatives are the very people who are lonely, hurt, and rejected. In trying to “get one up” on society, they didn’t just hurt others.
Quite the opposite, they hurt themselves in ways they can’t even grasp. They broke apart the very villages that would have accepted them, had they only given tolerance and self-reflection a chance.
Meanwhile, Leftists and zombies just wanted a united world where we could all live and let live. Sadly, Leftists and zombies weren’t aggressive enough to actually quash the right-wing takeover before it got so out of hand.
The unity and tolerance Leftists so adored died because they weren’t intolerant enough of racism, fascism, and sexism. So, white Leftists ended up losing much of their in-person communities too.
And as for the Zombies? Well, they’re going to realize the truth the hard way: hate makes it impossible to maintain normalcy.
White America is facing a reckoning of sorts.
The die is cast, so to speak. We’ve reached a point of no return when it comes to politics and society. We can’t hide behind plausible deniability anymore. There are no more excuses and shit’s getting real for everyone.
We’re at a point that should have come a while ago: the point where we hold a mirror to Medusa’s face and force ourselves to deal with the sirens whites have chased for deacdes.
The country can no longer hide behind the excuse of, “I didn’t think they were going to do that.” White Americans are going to have to reckon with the choices, patterns, and behaviors that got us Trump.
And frankly? I’m not sure all of us will like what we see.
